Workshop Leader and Speaker
   Ryszard Szymani, Ph.D., Director of Wood Machining Institute and Editor of the bimonthly international newsletter Wood Machining News. He is also the editor of the book Scanning Technology and Process Optimization: Advances in the Wood Industry. Szymani has been in the wood machining field for forty eight years, conducting research on high energy water jet cutting, veneer peeling, experimental and theoretical analysis of circular saw tensioning, technology of scanning and defect detection in lumber, thin kerf accurate sawing and the wear resistance improvement of saws and knives. He was instrumental in the development of the Saw Vibration Frequency Analyzer for evaluation of circular saw tensioning and has published over 120 technical papers, reports and conference proceedings and 193 issues of Wood Machining News.
Szymani has been conducting Workshops on Design and Operation of Circular and Band Saws since 1980 in the USA and abroad and organizing international conferences on Scanning and Sawing Technology (ScanTech and SawTech 1989-2007). Szymani is also editor of a book on Scanning Technology and Process Optimization: Advances in the Wood Industry. He has been consulting on wood machining problems and investigated accidents with woodworking equipment for over 37 years. He received a Ph.D. degree in Wood Science and Technology and MS degree in Eng. Science/Mech. Eng., from the U.C. Berkeley, MS degree in Wood Science from the U.B.C., Vancouver, B.C. Canada, and ME degree in Wood Technology from the College of Agriculture, Poznan, Poland.

Guest Lecturers
   Warren Bird, M.S., California Saw and Knife Works, LLC., Sutherlin, OR (Past President of California Saw and Knife Works, Inc., San Francisco, CA). Warren has developed heat-treating and grinding processes for the manufacture of thin circular saws with thin kerf and high strength. He has also adapted dynamic saw stability approach to the design of thin saws for industrial applications. Mr. Bird received a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a M.S. degree in Materials Engineering from the University of Texas.
   Udo Jahn, General Manager, Modern Engineering, Delta BC, Canada. Udo has been Modern Engineering's General Manager since 1986. With over 30 years' experience in manufacturing sawguides, Udo has made Modern stand out amongst it's competitors for not only the accuracy and consistency of our sawguides and CNC machining capabilities, but also for investing in skills development, innovation, automation, and sheer production power. Modern Engineering is now one of the largest CNC milling operations on the west coast.
   Devin Karamanos, V.P. of Sales & Service for western North America, Key Knife, Inc., Tualatin, OR. Devin has worked for Key Knife for 11 years in a variety of sales and service positions with extensive experience in sawmills, planer mills and wood yards. Devin has applied this knowledge & experience with chipping equipment &cutting tools to help drive product development and equipment troubleshooting.
   Gary Schajer, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada. His main research interests are in mechanics of cutting lumber and particleboards using circular and band saws, and commercial wood strength estimation. Formerly, he was a Senior Research Engineer with Weyerhaeuser Company, Tacoma, WA. His work with Weyerhaeuser concentrated on wood machining, wood strength estimation and wood drying research. He holds four patents and is the author of over seventy technical papers. He is recognized worldwide for his extensive research on circular saw tensioning and saw guides, as well as for his computer program, CSAW, for circular saw design.
   John Schultz, President, Super Thin Saws, Waterbury, Vermont. John received his BA cum laude in Mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971. He is the founder of Super Thin Saws which, since 1975, has been providing thin circular sawblades to the secondary wood processing industry. His primary responsibilities include sawblade design and being a doting grandparent. He is the author of numerous articles on sawing with thin circular saws in various woodworking journals and is active on several boards of directors including WMMA and IWF.
   Joe Shields, Senior Mechanical Service Technician, USNR, Woodland, WA. Joe has worked with U.S. Natural Resources (USNR), Inc. since 1979. Joe's knowledge of USNR equipment includes electrical, electronic, PLC and mechanical. Joe has applied his knowledge of these systems to aid in the diagnostics of sawing and chipping systems.
   Justin Williams, Chief Executive Officer, Williams & White Equipment, Burnaby, B.C. Canada. Justin is the owner and CEO of Williams & White Equipment, a Canadian company specializing in the development and production of automated tool sharpening and grinding machinery and other high-tolerance components and machinery for the sawmill industry. Justin is a registered Professional Engineer holdinga degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Commerce. His passion for robotics and automation is a driving force in Williams & White's product development achievements.
   Mike Zojonc, General Manager, Blanca Forestry Products, Blanca, CO. Mike is a 40 year veteran of the Forest Product Industry. He has 10 years experience as a Saw Filing Supervisor with 30 years total Management experience. Mike has an extensive background in project management, safety, lumber quality and process control, and thin kerf sawing.
